East Budlelgh will close out their Division Three season next saturday, as kick offs move to 3pm, then they can do no more than sit back for 7 months while they watch and see if they get promoted under a probable reshuffle.
With Division Three reduced to eleven teams by the withdrawal of Bow Res, Cheriton Fitzpaine 1st team and Topsham Res, then what had been a 14 membership group was cut down to eleven, which meant just 20 league games this season. So that takes care of six missing saturdays home and away.
East Budleigh rarely postpone a game because of the weather, and none of their away matches suffered that fate so they have skated through their fixtures and been left in the remarkable position of their season coming to an end way before time. It may be bad news but fact.
The good news is that they cannot be relegated despite having just one match left to play. Rarely has a team been in their situation, but the reality is at least they dont have to worry about going down and they could even get promoted.
The club will welcome Perry Street to Vicarage ground for their last match this coming saturday. Whatever the result they have acquired enough points to stay safe although the season for most others could yet last another three and a half months.
The club has played every saturday apart from the two festive weekends, since they kicked off back in August, 19 league games and one County cup tie, but it could be another seven months before the village first team parades again.
