Div 2- East Budleigh 2 Exeter University 0
East Budleigh returned to action last Saturday with a superb all round display to beat the students of Exeter University.
Goals from the Liams, Mabin and West respectively gave Budleigh a deserved three points.
An early goal line clearance from player manager Matt Jones gave Budleigh the impetus and a fine move involving Ross Bright, West, Dan Atkinson and Jacob Rice ended with the latter being denied by a good stop.
The midfield of Mabin, West and Hugo Demetre were now controlling the game, whilst wingers George Harris and Rice were working hard in both halves.
Budleigh keeper Dean Rawlings made an excellent one – on- one save on the half hour, before both Harris and Atkinson went close, but the deadlock was broken moments before the break.
Atkinson saw his shot blocked and when the rebound arrived back at his feet he squared for Mabin who scored a goal that his determination deserved.
The away side started the second half on the front foot, but Jones and his defence of Jack England, Dan Reynolds and Bright stood firm.
At the other end Demetre and Rice combined to set up Atkinson who was again denied by a fine challenge and Harris stung the fingertips of the visiting keeper from a well struck free-kick.
The clincher arrived on 76 minutes; Jack Howarth won Budleigh a corner, Mabin produced a well taken kick and it was West who timed his run to perfection to head home.
Man of the Match went to Jones, just shading Mabin, Demetre and Rice.
This Saturday Budleigh take on leaders Woodbury in what should be a competitive and entertaining game.
Div 8 – Otterton Res 1 East Budleigh Res 2
East Budleigh Reserves also produced a fine display to win away at local rivals Otterton last Saturday.
Playing against the wind in the first half Budleigh were playing some good football and went ahead when Joe Walker centred for Kai Guise to score.
Defensively Budleigh stood firm as the half-time whistle came.
Goal number two for Budleigh saw Corbin Couch win a 50/50 with the home keeper before tapping in, before a late rally from the host saw Mark Dobrijevic pull a goal back and it could have been 2-2 but for an excellent save from Budleigh keeper Mark Bown and follow up clearance from the goalline by Lewis Fletcher.
On the day Bown and Gareth Morrey stood out for Budleigh who have an afternoon off this weekend.
